Seborrhea is a skin disorder in cats that causes excessive flaking or oiliness of the skin and hair. It can be caused by a number of things, including genetics, underlying diseases, or an unbalanced diet:
Primary seborrhea: An inherited disease that's rare in cats. It's characterized by scaling skin and is not itchy.
Secondary seborrhea: A symptom of another disease, such as allergies, infections, parasites, or hormonal issues.
Unbalanced diet: An unbalanced diet can cause seborrhea.
Symptoms of seborrhea in cats include:
Flaky, red, or inflamed skin
An unpleasant odor
Oily coat
Skin that's worse in areas with skin folds, like the neck, face, feet, armpits, and thighs
Treatment for seborrhea depends on the cause and can include:
Antibiotics, Steroids, Shampoos, Vitamin A or retinoids, Hormone therapy, and Diet adjustments.
If your cat has genetic seborrhea, it can only be managed, but it's usually not curable. A healthy diet with enough fatty acids can help prevent the condition.
